Electronic Medical Record Incentive Payments

The American Academy of Family Physicians recently reported that the federal incentive funds physicians receive for the implementation of Electronic Medical Record will be taxed as regular income, thus diminishing its impact. 

 

Many EHR vendors are pricing their products just at or under the $44,000 incentive threshold as a sales strategy, marketing their product as "practically free".   Depending on the income tax bracket, the net value of the incentive rebate could be reduced as much as $16,700 to only $27,300, an important consideration for those budgeting for a transition to electronic records.
