Not So Meaningful Use?

August 8, 2014

According to new data from CMS, a total of 972 physicians and 10 hospitals have attested to Stage 2 of the meaningful use program as of July 1.

As dismal as these number appear, they actually represent a doubling of the number of attesting providers since the end of May, when 447 providers and 8 hospitals had attested. The actual number of attesters for 2014 is very low.  In total 2,823 professionals, or 3% of all eligible professionals and 128 hospitals, or 1% of all eligible hospitals, have attensted to stage 1 or stage 2 of meaningful use for the 2014 reporting year.

Despite these small percentages of potentially eligible providers and hospitals, Elisabeth Myers of CMS' Office of eHealth Standards and Services, cautioned against reading too much into the data. Furthermore, a review of attestations in 2011-2013 shows the vast majority of attestations occurred in the last two quarters of the year.

CMS is hoping to see a similar pattern emerge in 2014.
